Superficially, at least, Imgur seems to skew a little younger than Reddit.

(Or a fully user-generated BuzzFeed alternative - the site lets users post headlines and captions in such a way that image galleries can become, in essence, full posts.) Or, to put it another way, they're treating it as a Reddit alternative. But image views far outpace uploads, and there's evidence that users are treating Imgur as a destination rather than a simple image host.

Schaaf attributes some of this to Imgur's role as an image upload service - in the process of uploading, you would likely visit the site directly. Direct visits to the site account for about 30% of visitors, a very close second to Reddit referrals. More surprising is the manner in which visitors are arriving. After a long period of steady grown and a 30% surge last month, its 100 million monthly unique visitors click on about 2 billion images a day. Two years ago the site was hovering around 30 million people a month. Growth has been steady, according to Imgur COO Matt Strader and founder Alan Schaaf, who operate Imgur independently. Again: Imgur, which basically grew out of Reddit, is now bigger than Reddit. By a lot, actually: Reddit's internal numbers put it at about 70 million unique visitors a month Imgur's claim 100 million. So this comes as surprising news: Imgur, according to the site's internal numbers and to Alexa, is now larger than Reddit. Imgur was started by a user to fill that niche, and it did. Reddit, an enormous website with millions of users, doesn't provide a way to publish images. If you ever forgot a link or something there's also a handy history list you can access by double-clicking on the traybar icon.Īnd all of the above using only a single traybar icon, the Print Screen hotkey and the native Send To context menu of Windows. Most people with a need to describe Imgur do it like this: Imgur is Reddit's favorite image host.

Check.I use it daily on all my computers nowadays due to how simple and effective it is. The amount of stuff you can do with it is insane and it have completely changed my workflow (saying this as a previous user of Greenshot). Also, I don't have any tracking on my site and when I post a direct image URL it doesn't redirect to a full page on mobile (unlike Imgur) so I'd argue it's better than Imgur.

I already convert PNGs over 5MB to JPEG before they're uploaded to save space so all my screenshots aren't even 10GB (yet). I had a ton of spare resources I wasn't really doing anything with so it just made sense and didn't really cost me anything. However, now that I'm hosting all my screenshots myself, I can.

None really covered what I wanted to do and I had a bunch of free server resources so I decided to just host them myself on a subdomain of a domain I was planning on using anyway.Īdditionally, Imgur never really gave me an easy way to mark individual images in an album as NSFW. I finally got fed up with it and decided to look at alternatives. It wasn't uncommon for me to hit that during a play session. That's limited to 50 images per IP address per hour (unless I want to pay for more). Thus, I'm using Imgur's API rather than their web uploader. The main issue is that I use ShareX to take and upload screenshots. Also, while it isn't lossless compression it's pretty much visually lossless. Fine, I get it, they host billions of images and want to save bandwidth and hard drive space. However, Imgur recompresses all images over 5MB with JPEGmini.
